Non Maintained Emergency Lights

Loss of power due to emergencies or power cuts can cause panic and delay evacuation which could cost lives. Every building that is used by the public must be fitted with emergency lights to help guide people to the nearest exit. Non maintained emergency lighting is a type of lighting that will switch on if the power in a building fails. It is linked to both a battery and the lighting circuitry in a building so if the power is on, the light stays off but if the power is lost, the non maintained lighting kicks in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are non-maintained emergency lights?

Non-maintained emergency lights are normally off while the mains supply is healthy. If the monitored supply fails, the battery powers the emergency lamp for its rated duration. A small charge or status indicator may remain visible during normal operation even though the main light source is off.

What is the difference between maintained and non-maintained emergency lighting?

Maintained emergency lighting is illuminated during normal use and continues on battery power after a supply failure. Non-maintained emergency lighting only illuminates when that failure occurs. Both need a permanent charging supply, correct positioning and routine testing; the building's use and emergency-lighting design determine which mode is appropriate.

When are non-maintained bulkhead emergency lights suitable?

Non-maintained bulkhead emergency lights can suit escape routes, stairways, corridors and open areas that do not need the emergency fitting for everyday illumination. The decision should come from the fire-risk assessment and lighting design, including the required coverage, mounting height, environment and emergency duration.

Do non-maintained emergency lights need a permanent electrical supply?

Yes. Although their main LEDs are normally off, non-maintained emergency lights need an unswitched supply to charge the battery and detect a mains failure. Isolating that supply can leave the battery uncharged or trigger emergency operation, so wiring and local test facilities should be planned by a competent person.

How often should non-maintained emergency lighting be tested?

Non-maintained emergency lighting needs routine functional checks and periodic full-duration tests, with results logged. Testing confirms that each fitting responds to a supply failure and maintains its rated operation. Follow current emergency-lighting guidance, site procedures and manufacturer instructions, and replace deteriorated batteries or faulty fittings promptly.
