GU10 vs Integrated LED Downlights

Neither format is universally better. A GU10 downlight is a fitting with a separate twist-lock lamp you can change yourself in seconds, while an integrated LED downlight is a sealed unit with the LEDs and driver built in, which you replace as a whole when it eventually fails. GU10 wins on serviceability, flexibility and being the easy retrofit from halogen. Integrated wins on slimness, heat management, colour consistency and smoother dimming.

What each format actually is

A GU10 downlight is really two products. The fitting is a metal or plastic body with a bezel, a spring clip pair and a GU10 lampholder on a flex tail. The light source is a separate mains-voltage GU10 lamp, 50mm across the face, that pushes in and twists a quarter turn to lock. Everything electronic (the LED chips and the tiny driver) lives inside that lamp. Change the lamp and you have changed the light.

An integrated LED downlight is one sealed assembly. The LED board is bonded to a heatsink inside the fitting body, with a diffuser or lens over it, and the driver either sits in a small box on a flex tail above the ceiling or is built into the fitting itself. There is nothing to unplug and nothing to replace. When it stops working, the fitting comes out.

Both come in the same broad shapes and bezel finishes, both are sold fire rated, and both go in through a similar cut-out on spring clips. The physical fitting job is close to identical. See cut-out sizes explained and finishes and bezels.

Lifespan, heat and what happens at the end of it

Rated life for a GU10 LED lamp is typically 15,000 to 25,000 hours. Integrated fittings are usually rated 30,000 to 50,000 hours. Both figures are L70 numbers, meaning the point at which output has faded to 70% of new, not the point at which it dies. Neither is a promise, and both assume the fitting is running at a sensible temperature.

The gap is mostly about heat. A GU10 lamp has to fit its driver electronics into a barrel about 50mm wide behind the LEDs, and that whole package then sits inside an enclosed, often insulation-covered fire-rated can. Electrolytic capacitors in the driver are the usual first casualty, which is why GU10 lamps in tight, hot ceilings frequently fail well short of their rating. An integrated fitting spreads its LEDs across a much larger heatsink and usually puts the driver in a separate box sitting in free air in the void, so both components run cooler.

The trade is what happens when it does fail. A GU10 failure costs you a few pounds and two minutes on a stepladder, with no tools and no electrician. An integrated failure means dropping the fitting out, disconnecting it at the terminal block and fitting a replacement, which is electrical work. If the model has been discontinued (and after five to ten years it almost certainly has), the new one may want a different cut-out, may sit at a different depth, and will very likely be a slightly different shade of white from its neighbours. That is how a single failure turns into replacing the whole room.

One practical habit helps in both cases: buy a couple of spares (fittings or lamps) with the original order and keep them boxed in the loft.

Slimness and ceiling void depth

This is where integrated has a genuine, unarguable advantage. A GU10 lamp is roughly 50mm long before you add the lampholder and its connector behind it, so a GU10 fire-rated fitting generally needs somewhere around 80 to 110mm of clear depth above the plasterboard. Integrated fittings start at about 25 to 30mm for slim or low-profile designs, with a separate driver you can push sideways along the void.

That matters more often than people expect. Shallow voids under a first floor, ceilings battened below a concrete slab, loft conversions, and any run landing close to a joist all favour a slim integrated unit. Measure the void before you buy, and check the model's stated depth and its clearance to insulation.

Colour temperature, consistency and changing your mind later

Colour consistency is measured in SDCM (standard deviation of colour matching). At 3 SDCM or tighter a run of downlights looks uniform; at 5 or 6 you start to see one fitting reading pinker or greener than the next, especially against a white ceiling.

Integrated fittings bought together generally come from one production batch and match well. GU10 lamps are commodity items, and a value lamp bought two years later from a different brand can be visibly off against its neighbours even when the box says the same 4000K. Buying all your GU10 lamps at once, from one brand and one batch, largely solves this.

The flip side is flexibility, and it is a real benefit. With GU10 you can change the colour temperature of a whole room for the price of a set of lamps. Kitchen feels too clinical at 4000K? Buy 3000K lamps and swap them in an afternoon. With an integrated fitting the colour is fixed for the life of the product unless it is a switchable model.

4CCT switchable options now exist in both formats, which narrows this gap considerably. Integrated versions use a small selector switch on the fitting body, so you set it before you push the fitting up (worth deciding before installation, because reaching it afterwards means dropping the fitting). Switchable GU10 lamps are usually changed by a slider on the lamp barrel or by cycling the wall switch, so you can adjust them from the floor. Dimming compatibility

Integrated fittings usually dim better. A driver with more physical space and a dedicated dimming circuit can often hold a smooth, flicker-free output down to 5% or even 1%, and good manufacturers publish a tested dimmer compatibility list for the exact model. GU10 lamps have to do all of that inside the lamp barrel, and many bottom out around 10 to 20%, flicker at the low end, or drop out entirely.

But GU10 gives you a cheap escape route. If a set of lamps dims badly on your dimmer, a different brand of lamp costs a few pounds each to try. If an integrated fitting dims badly, your options are changing the dimmer or replacing every fitting. Check the compatibility list before you buy integrated, not after.

Fire rating and IP rating in both formats

Both formats are widely available fire rated to 30, 60 and 90 minutes, and both are available at IP65. Neither format is inherently more or less compliant.

There is one nuance worth knowing on each. A fire-rated GU10 fitting is only fire rated when it is used with its intumescent gasket intact and closed, and the rating is tested for the fitting, not the lamp, so a badly seated lamp or a missing bezel undermines it. An IP65 GU10 fitting relies on a sealed glass or polycarbonate lens in front of the lamp, so if you remove the lens to change a lamp you must reseat it properly to restore the rating. An integrated IP65 fitting is sealed at the factory and cannot be compromised by a lamp change, which is a small point in its favour for bathrooms.

What each costs over ten years

Take a ten-downlight kitchen as a worked example. Comparable fire-rated fittings in the two formats sit close together on price, and the up-front difference across ten points is usually small. Whichever way it falls, it is minor next to the cost of having an electrician in to do the work, so it rarely justifies choosing one format over the other.

Over ten years, a kitchen used three hours a day runs about 11,000 hours. Good GU10 lamps should survive that; cheap ones in hot, insulated ceilings often will not, so you may need to replace the set of lamps once in that time. That is still a fraction of what an integrated fitting plus the labour to change it would cost. Integrated fittings should also last the distance, but any that do fail take a new fitting and an electrician with them.

Ten-year costs are close enough that price should not decide this. Decide on depth, dimming and who maintains the lights.

Landlords deserve a note. In a let property, the person who notices a dead downlight is rarely the owner. A GU10 lamp is a five-minute job for a tenant or handyman; an integrated fitting is a call-out. That difference often outweighs everything else above, which is why GU10 remains the rental default.

The short answer

GU10 is the flexible, serviceable, retrofit-friendly choice, and it is still the easiest path from halogen. Integrated is the slim, consistent, low-maintenance choice, and it is the only option in a shallow void. Both are available fire rated, IP65 and 4CCT switchable, so those requirements will not decide it for you.

Work through it in this order: measure your void depth (that can rule out GU10 outright), decide who will be maintaining the lights, then check dimming if you are dimming. If none of those points decisively one way, buy whichever fitting you prefer the look of, because in a finished room you will only ever see the bezel.

What happens when an integrated LED downlight fails?

The whole fitting is replaced, which is electrical work. Drop the fitting out of the ceiling, disconnect it at the terminal block and fit a new one. The catch is matching: after several years the model is usually discontinued, so the replacement may want a different cut-out and will rarely be an exact colour match. Keeping a spare fitting from the original order avoids most of that.

Can I replace a GU10 downlight with an integrated one?

Yes, but it is a fitting change rather than a lamp change, so it needs an electrician. Check the new fitting's cut-out against your existing hole first: GU10 fittings commonly use 65mm, 70mm or 75mm cut-outs, and an integrated model with a smaller cut-out than your existing hole will leave a gap.
